How 5G Can Wreck Havoc In Your The Little Corner

5G, Donald Trump, Huawei, EU, 5G, repeat. It doesn’t make sense. The US government has banned Huawei from buying American components, banned them and their affiliates from American markets, and are charging some of its top officials including their chief financial officer and the daughter of the founder of Huawei.

Trump released an executive order “that foreign adversaries are increasingly creating and exploiting vulnerabilities in information and communications technology and services” and held the Chinese giants responsible for that.

FBI Director Christopher Wray said Huawei “provides the capacity to maliciously modify or steal information, and it provides the capacity to conduct undetected espionage.” Adding, too: “the risks of allowing any company or entity that is beholden to foreign governments that don’t share our values to gain positions of power inside our telecommunications.”

There are three ways you can interpret this. One, Trump is punishing Huawei as part of his offensive in the trade war with China. Two, Trump is mad that American companies are slow in developing 5G and is trying to derail the progress of the foreign company to buy time for American entities. Three, Trump is just being Trump, fighting dirty and forcing himself into the center of the news.

But how does this concern you? First, let’s refresh your mind about how fast 5G can be?

5G potency

5G is said to be 100 times faster than 4G network at 10 gigabytes per second. A practical example is that it will take you less than four seconds to download a two-hour length movie while it would take six minutes to download the same movie with 4G and more than a full day on 3G. This is just the crown of the bottle as 5G entails many more including the capability to accurately predict hurricanes, tsunamis, and earthquakes.

And 5G is purely wireless with no need for fiber cables, diggings, and all that exertions.

How easy are your passwords

Bring it on. You can’t wait but the US government is not as enthusiastic as you are. They believe that the leading makers of the service are rogue entities and must not be patronized. But besides the politics of Trump and Huawei, besides the expertly worded political grammar, the claims and counter-claims, is there any harm that 5G has in store in its hidden corners? Let’s take a look.

How can 5G wreak havoc on you?

Radiofrequency radiation hazards

5G is a hundred times faster than 4G and it also requires dozens more energy and resources. One aspect that worries many is radiofrequency radiation. Radiofrequency radiation or RFR is the electric and magnetic waves that are emitted in all electromagnetic systems such as radio, light, TV, microwave, cell networks, etc. Non-ionizing radiations are too weak to be dangerous but ionizing radiations are thought to be harmful. Exposure to very high RFR (ionizing) can result in the heating of biological tissue and an increase in body temperature and has the potency to damage the DNA, cause cancer, and affect the eyes and the testes.

The problem is that research can’t say for sure if these can happen. According to the Federal Communications Commission, “there has been no determination that such effects constitute a human health hazard.” They admit that the research is on-going with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Toxicology Program, and the National Institutes of Health all in the matter.

So if there is real harm, they will find out. Meanwhile, treat RFR problems from 5G as a possibility.

Security and privacy issues

5G is a fifth-generation network, the risks it portends are also fifth-generation. From the builders of 5G to your network service provider to the software makers involved in its installation, there are dozens of experts and dozens of possibilities of someone slotting in a backdoor with which to spy on you and make nonsense of your privacy.

The European Union assessment of the dangers of 5G says that due to its advanced technological capabilities, non-government-backed networks are prone to attackers and would be unable, so far, to mitigate their porousness. They are basically saying you and I are on our own.

One of the merits many people point out about 5G is its capability to control all devices via one channel. This dependency on one channel makes your vulnerabilities united in their exposure to one channel – meaning, once a hacker gets in, he is in on every single device of yours.

On a small scale, the cost of 5G which is expected to be prohibitive is one way 5G can affect you adversely. The cost of building the infrastructure is so high that it would cost a lot to use the network. And since devices today are not built for 3G and 4G, they won’t be compatible with 5G. This is an advantage in itself in that you can have some of your devices outside the coverage and dangers of 5G.

But if you must ride with the sizzling wave, you would have to spend a fortune buying a lot of pricey devices. With time, you will come to realize that agony is part of the 5G package.
